Every year close to 15,000 pregnant women in Philadelphia choose abortion. In the past, many pregnant women were left to face the decision alone. It was in 1980 that Frank H. King, Jr., MD and members of Tenth Presbyterian Church founded Alpha with a commitment to provide compassionate alternatives to abortion. Later that year, this vision became a reality when a group of volunteers from local churches staffed a hotline for those with pregnancy related concerns. During 1981, Alpha formalized its existence through incorporation in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and by receiving 501 (c) 3 non-profit status from the IRS. In 2000 the agency received licensure from the Commonwealth as a Level I Clinical Laboratory. In 2004, Alpha purchased the building at 1601 Lombard Street. The generous gifts of God’s people enabled both the down payment and upgrade of this facility. 1981 - Alpha Formalized |
